Why We’re Still Waiting on Sherlock Holmes 3

Why We’re Still Waiting on Sherlock Holmes 3

It’s been over five years since the last installment of the Sherlock Holmes franchise, the hit film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (2011). Fans of the legendary detective have been eagerly anticipating a third installment, but alas, it seems the wheels of production have ground to a halt. Why are we still waiting for Sherlock Holmes 3, and what’s holding it back?

The Uncertain Future of the Film Franchise

In the wake of the success of "A Game of Shadows", which grossed over $543 million worldwide, many expected a swift and logical continuation of the story. However, the filmmakers and Warner Bros. failed to deliver a concrete script, and the project’s momentum began to slow down.

In 2014, it was reported that Guy Ritchie, director of the first two films, was in talks with co-writer Lionel Wigram to develop a script for Sherlock Holmes 3. However, the two collaborators have since gone on to work on other projects, leaving the fate of the franchise uncertain.

Starring Powerhouse Delay

One of the biggest roadblocks to the making of Sherlock Holmes 3 is the scheduling conflicts between its two lead stars: Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Downey Jr., who has played Sherlock Holmes in both films, has been deeply invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in the Avengers franchise and recently completing the third installment, Avengers: Endgame. His busy schedule has likely kept him from committing to another Sherlock Holmes film in the near future.

Meanwhile, Jude Law, who portrayed Dr. John Watson, has also been engaged in various projects, including TV shows and films like "Fantastic Beasts" and "The Young Pope". His availability has become a significant obstacle in assembling a cast and crew for Sherlock Holmes 3.

Creative Differences and Lack of a Compelling Script

Another significant hurdle facing the production of Sherlock Holmes 3 is the challenge of crafting a compelling storyline. The first two films relied heavily on the comedic and action-packed chemistry between Downey Jr. and Law, but it remains to be seen whether they can recapture that magic without a strong narrative driving the plot forward.

Lionel Wigram, who co-wrote the previous films, has publicly stated that he is unsure whether he will return for Sherlock Holmes 3 due to creative differences with Ritchie. This uncertainty casts doubt on the film’s viability, as the writer-director duo has been the driving force behind the franchise’s success.

Will We Ever See Sherlock Holmes 3?

While the prospects of a Sherlock Holmes 3 seem grim at the moment, there is still hope for the franchise’s revival. Guy Ritchie has expressed a willingness to revisit the world of Sherlock Holmes, provided he can find a story and script that meet his creative standards.

In recent interviews, Downey Jr. has also hinted that he would be open to returning as Sherlock Holmes if a compelling script were developed. Jude Law has expressed similar sentiments, stating that he would be willing to reprise his role as Dr. Watson if the timing and script were right.

While the wait may seem interminable, it’s possible that Warner Bros. and the cast and crew are taking their time to develop a narrative that does justice to the iconic characters. Until then, fans of Sherlock Holmes will have to continue biding their time, holding out hope that the esteemed detective will one day return to the big screen in a thrilling new adventure.
